Maria
Sibylla Merian (1647-1717)
Biography:
Merian was the daughter
of engraver and the step-daughter of artist. A
self-taught entomologist, she was
encouraged
in painting, and was fascinated by butterflies and moths.
She undertook a dangerous journey to
South America in 1699 to in order to draw and paint New World
butterflies.
