IOWA-IOWA STATE RIVALRY

The Iowa-Iowa State football rivalry was initiated in 1894 with a 16 to 8 Iowa State Victory in Iowa City.  Though Iowa State started out with victories in 1894, 1895, and 1897, Iowa has been the dominant team over the years, and currently lead the series 33 to 14.  Except for 1903 and 1908, the intrastate rivalry was contested yearly from 1899 to 1920.  It was then dropped for thirteen years.  The two teams played in 1933 (Iowa won, 27-7) and 1934 (Iowa State won 31-6). The series was then dropped until 1977, and has been played annually since that time.
