Max S. Wortman, Jr. Max S. Wortman, Jr. received his Bachelor of Science degree (1956) in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and his Doctor of Philosophy degree (1962) in Business Administration in the fields of Industrial Relations, Management, Labor Economics, and Statistics from the University of Minnesota. His dissertation was titled, "Some Influences of Membership in Employer Bargaining Associations Upon Manpower Management Functions in Industrial Organizations in a Local Labor Market." He attended a Case Method Program for Visiting Professors at Harvard Business School in the summer of 1965. He taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, the University of Massachusetts, the U. S. Navy Postgraduate School, and the University of Iowa (1962-1981). Wortman was the William B. Stokely chair in management (1981-1988) at the University of Tennessee. He was employed by the Iowa State University College of Business Administration (1988) and became a Distinguished Professor of Management at Iowa State University. He suddenly passed away in 2005.
