Entries in the directory include date and location of birth; education; professional experience; concurrent positions held; memberships; research; and mailing address. Scientists included in this work are selected if they meet one of several criteria:

1. They show distinguished achievement , by reason experience,training, or accomplishment;
2. Their scientific research activity is of high quality;
3. They have attained a position of substantial responsibility requiring scientific training and experience.

The concise entries include name, dates, nationality, reason for inclusion in the dictionary, a brief biographical sketch, and references to other works. A subject index is included with headings like Mathematics, Pure and Applied Sciences, and Medicine.

Contains an alphabetical listing of women nutritionists which includes their birth and death dates, nationalities, and sources of information. It also contains an index of the scientists by occupation, like Food Scientists, Home Economists, and Nutritionists.

Covers the most significant achievements of American women who lived between 1607 and 1950. Entries are arranged alphabetically and includes a subject index.

 

Notable American women : the modern period : a biographical dictionary. Cambridge, Mass. : Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1980.

Following the same format as the earlier edition, the purpose for the updated version was to record more information about the accomplishments of American women. Because of the lack of recorded information, the compilers solicited suggestions for subjects from various fields (including the sciences). The resulting work includes information about 442 women from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. The subject index includes headings for Biochemistry, Chemistry, Researchers, and Nutrition.

Contains detailed information about women who made contributions to science and technology. Listings include dates of birth and death, nationality, birthplace, family members, education, and professional activities. There is a subject index by field, nationality, and historic era.

 

Siegel, Patricia Joan. Women in the scientific search : an American bio-bibliography, 1724-1979. Metuchen, N.J. : Scarecrow Press, 1985.

An annotated bibliography, Siegel’s work describes general biographies as well as works about specific women in the various scientific fields.

The entries are arranged alphabetically by state (or political unit), then by city and institution name within the city. The following information may be included for each entry: name of institution; address; mailing address and telephone number; days and hours of service; user fees; general restrictions on access to the institution; availability of copying facilities; acquisitions policy; volume of total holdings of historical source materials; and inclusive dates.

In two volumes, the first describes archival and manuscript collections of primary sources (including the entry #, collection title, inclusive dates, size, access, and location). It is arranged by state, city, and by institution; repositories within cities, plus it contains an alphabetical listing with names and addresses. The second volume is an index by name, subject, and geographic locations of the collections.

She discusses the reasons why women were often excluded in the scientific arena and why the records of their accomplishments are so limited.

 

Rossiter, Margaret W. Women scientists in America : struggles and strategies to 1940. Baltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press, c1982.

In one of the most noted books on the subject of women in science, Rossiter chronicles the obstacles women faced in their pursuits for higher education and more specifically, to become actively involved in the sciences. She discusses the contributions and efforts of women scientists and their lasting implications.

This basic textbook draws on a large amount of nutitional data and research. On the whole, it provides a conservative basic overview of nutrition, but with little historical context.
