May Day Festival
May Day, 1910
The May Day Festival, the first of the divisional celebrations, began May 1907. The Women's Athletic Association started the May Day Festival in honor of the women in the senior class, or as they called themselves the "senioritas". The activities included many traditional May Day events such as a May Pole, May Queen, picnic, and a pageant. The female students chose the most accomplished senior woman to be May Queen; the first May Queen was Harriette Beyer (Stange). The pageant, usually written and produced by the students, consisted of dancing and pantomime.
