VEISHEA Swans

Swans on Lake LaVerne, circa 1936

In 1935, the VEISHEA Central Committee purchased a pair of swans for Lake LaVerne, the man made lake at the base of the Memorial Union. A contest was held to name the swans and after three people suggested the names it was agreed the swans would be called Lancelot and Elaine. The VEISHEA Central Committee continued the swan theme throughout that year's celebration with a water carnival including a canoe race, log-rolling, and large swan-shaped boat that floated on Lake LaVerne during the opening ceremonies. Swans continue to be one of the symbols of VEISHEA today.
